After the applause faded, he leaned toward me.
“Do you regret asking me to show no mercy?” he asked quietly.
I looked around the room at women waiting to speak with attorneys, advocates, and case managers.
Some carried bruises.
Some held children’s hands.
Others looked exactly as I had that night—cold, stunned, and ashamed of something another person had done to them.
“No,” I said. “But I understand it differently now.”
He waited.
“I didn’t need you to destroy him because I hated him,” I explained. “I needed the truth to become stronger than his lies.”
My father’s expression softened.
“And it did,” he said.
